TAMPA, Fla. (December 3, 2014) — The first of its kind in the Southeastern U.S., a dazzling display of custom-made Chinese lantern structures will illuminate Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo this spring for Zoominations, A Chinese Lantern Festival of Lights. Colossal by day and radiant after dark, the three-month exhibition at the Zoo will debut February 28, 2015 during Chinese New Year celebrations (which occur February 19-March 5, 2015 throughout China).

Sixty highly-skilled craftsman from the village of Zigong in China's Sichuan province will arrive at the Zoo in January to craft large illuminated structures created from silk, satin and vinyl covering steel frames. When the festival opens, guests can discover 30 spectacular scenes which will include replicas of the Beijing Temple of Heaven (China’s largest existing masterpiece first built in 1420) and larger-than-life dragons, pandas, rhinos, elephants, zebras, giraffes, dinosaurs and flowers.

In China, the Lantern Festival is held on the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration (falling on March 5 in 2015). It is one of the country’s most important traditional festivals, tracing back to the Han Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago. During the festival, colorful lanterns can be seen in streets, homes, stores and parks as a vivid demonstration of traditional Chinese folklore.

Anticipated to be one of the largest lantern festivals held in the U.S., Zoominations will also feature performances by Chinese acrobats and an artisan market with unique handmade crafts. Tickets for evening events will go on sale online in 2015. Visit www.LowryParkZoo.org in 2015 for more information.
