TAMPA, Fla. (APRIL 15, 2016) – Karamu XXVIII, the annual gala at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, returns Saturday, April 16 with an elegant and memorable evening inspired by the theme of “Legacy.” Karamu supports the Zoo’s conservation and education programs along with the Zoo’s legacy of commitment to preserving our most precious natural resources.

“We are so pleased to be temporary stewards for this year’s Karamu,” said Ken and
Jenny Jones, co-chairs, who selected the theme of “Legacy” for this year’s event. “We all strive to inspire a legacy in creating a positive indelible mark on our communities, cities, relationships and worthy institutions such as the Zoo. We hope to continue to build and inspire the Zoo’s legacy in 2016 and beyond.”

Karamu takes place in the Zoo’s spectacular Safari Lodge events facility and adjoining
outdoor plaza. For this year’s event, a timeless black, white and grey color palette creates a clean and sophisticated backdrop for lush “living walls” (also known as vertical gardens). These bright green accents bring natural tranquility to the décor in an elegant and delicate manner.

The black-tie gala welcomes guests at 6:30 p.m. with signature cocktails, hors
d’oeuvres, up-close animal encounters and scenic views of the African savannah. At 8 p.m., Spectra Food Services, the official catering provider of the Zoo, will serve a plated three-course dinner featuring an heirloom tomato and baby arugula salad, slow braised boneless beef short ribs with whipped purple potatoes, and a duet dessert of salted caramel ganache and roasted apple tartlets. Live music from the high-energy Chello Hollyday band, and live and silent auctions add to the festivities.

Karamu, from the Swahili word for “party,” has raised more than $3 million in support of
animal care and education programs at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo over the last 28 years. The Zoo gratefully acknowledges presenting sponsor Regions, for the 17th consecutive year, and Ashley Homestore.
