    African White Rhinoceros Born at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo

    A southern white rhinoceros was born overnight on October 9 to experienced mother "Kidogo." The newest offspring marks the third successful southern white rhino birth and the sixth rhino born in the Zoo's history (three African, three Asian). The newest male calf has been named "Khari" (K-har-E), an African name meaning "king like."

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo Celebrates African Penguin Awareness Day With Another Hatchling

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has welcomed another African penguin chick, the second this year. Now six-weeks old, the newest chick recently transitioned to zookeeper care to facilitate independence and learning to swim before ultimately joining the colony on exhibit in another month or two.

    “Two Cute” Baby Celebration Saturday at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is buzzing about a newborn African elephant (born July 29) and her big sister, Mpumi, 7-months-old. We’ve planned a “TWO CUTE” celebration of our big (and small) bundles of joy this Saturday, August 10 from 10 am-12 p.m. with family entertainment, docent talks, animal enrichments and activities for kids. This event is included with daytime Zoo admission and is free for Annual Zoo Pass holders.

    First Look at Precious Newborn Pachyderm at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo

    The newest “princess” at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo -- a oneweek-old African elephant calf -- has been introduced to all four females in the herd and the outdoor elephant savannah. The yet unnamed female calf can be seen on exhibit in the mornings, playing with her sister Mpumi, 7-months-old, and exploring her habitat.

    Baby Buzz: Welcome to the Zoo, Not One Baby Elephant But Two

    She's not royalty, but the newest baby at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo is sure to capture a "ton" of attention. Just seven months after the Zoo welcomed an African elephant calf, another was born July 29 at 11:20 p.m. to first-time mother "Matjeka." The newborn is the second elephant calf born in Tampa from a herd of 11 elephants rescued from culling in Swaziland, Africa, and brought to the U.S. a decade ago.

    There’s a New Ape In Town: Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo Welcomes Male Bornean Orangutan

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has welcomed the arrival of an adult male Bornean orangutan named “Goyang” pronounced GO-young). The 14-year-old great ape arrived last month from Pittsburgh Zoo to be the dominant male of the Zoo’s orangutan group. After a series of introductions to the Zoo’s female orangutans, zookeepers began the process of acclimating him to the outdoor habitat.

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo Sending Seven Red Tide Survivors Home to Lee County

    Seven manatee red tide survivors rehabilitated at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo’s will be returned to Florida waters on July 9. The Zoo’s David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center is the only critical care facility to treat sea cows sick from red tide during this season’s bloom.

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo Prepares to Release 15 Red Tide Survivors

    In 2013, a preliminary record number of 270 wild manatee deaths have been associated with an algae bloom known as red tide in Southwest Florida waters. Through extensive response efforts of The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and its partners, 16 manatees overcome by the toxin were able to be rescued, clinging to life. Each was transported to the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo for critical care, where all but one survived. The 15 red tide survivors will soon be returned to Florida waters, starting with two on June 13.

    Mother’s Day Came Early for Endangered Indian Rhinoceros at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo

    One day before her own birthday, and three days before Mother’s Day, an endangered Indian rhinoceros (also known as a greater one-horned rhinoceros) named “Jamie” gave birth to a male calf Thursday, May 9. The birth is the third for the Zoo in five years, and a significant conservation milestone for the species with fewer than 60 animals in the managed population.

    The Newest Star Has Stripes at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is wild about moms, including one of the newest who lives at the Zoo: “Betty” an adult female okapi with a 4-month-old offspring, “Bahati”. At the Zoo's recent Karamu gala, the Emerick family of Tampa won the live auction opportunity to sponsor and name the calf. They selected a Swati name, Bahati, which means lucky. Bahati is just beginnning to emerge from the newborn "nesting phase", a hiding behavior common and in the wild, providing protection from predators. He has grown from 64 pounds at birth on January 6, to more than 283 pounds in April (gaining 10-15 pounds per week).

    ¡Vamos al Zoológico! - Let's Go to the Zoo!

    Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is hosting the 4th annual Día del Niño, or Day of the Child, on Sunday, April 28 featuring character appearances by both “Dora the Explorer” and “Go Diego Go” from Nick Jr. ™ -- together for the first time at the Zoo. Día del Niño is observed in many Latin American countries as a day to celebrate childhood.

The Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and is featured among the “Top 25 Zoos in the U.S” by TripAdvisor (2015) and “10 Best Zoos in the U.S.” by Trekaroo (2015). The Zoo is located at 1101 W. Sligh Avenue in Tampa, one mile west of I-275 (exit 48) and is open seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
