Summer Zoo School Camps

No School? No Problem!

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is proud to be the first (and only!) facility in Tampa Bay to offer an all-inclusive camp program. All camps include extended care (7 am to 6 pm) and lunch at Safari Lodge! Lunch includes choice of sandwich, whole fruit, chips, & cookie.* Kids and teens can learn about nature, science and the animal kingdom while hiking through the Zoo and exploring behind-the-scenes. Camp still includes the tried and true animal encounters, keeper talks, educational shows, games, crafts and more. Additionally, each camper will receive one Junior Zookeeper Pass to return to the Zoo and show off what they’ve learned! *Camper must bring refillable water bottle and two snacks daily.  Academic day starts at 9am and continues until 4pm.

A typical day at Camp includes:

Schedules vary depending on the grade level, instructor and weekly theme.

Important Information

  • School Holiday camps are for children currently enrolled in grades K-8.  Summer camps are for children who have completed grades K-8.
  • Academic day 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Free extended care from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Lunch included, daily (Camper MUST bring refillable water bottle and two snacks, daily).

Things that Make You Go Eww – Animals have some pretty disgusting habits important for their survival, like the vulture that vomits to keep its predators away. Learn the filthy facts of the animal world in this repulsively interesting camp.

Around the World – Do you have the travel bug? Get your passport ready and explore each continent’s unique animals, cultures and traditions in this global camp.

Feeding Frenzy – Learn what it means to be at the top of the food chain. Explore the animal world to find out who the best hunter is and how others avoid becoming their dinner!

Purr-fect Pets – Are you ready to own a pet? Learn how to pick a pet that’s right for you in this pet training basics camp.

Week 3: June 5th – June 9th

Eco Art – Go green while you let your imagination and creativity run wild in this earth friendly art camp. Learn how to transform trash into treasure!

Dino-Mite! – Take a trip back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Learn what the world was like before we were around and what kinds of creatures still remain from our primal past.

Positively Primates – Swing through the trees and drop into this camp to learn all about the Zoo’s incredible primates.

Special Delivery – Cute and cuddly or even slippery and slimy, we love them when they’re little!


Week 4: June 12th – June 16th

Mana-tee-rific – Learn all about Florida’s gentle giants and how Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is helping this endangered animal.

Scales, Feathers, Fur – Mammals, reptiles, and birds, oh my! Learn the distinct differences and surprising similarities of these amazing animals.

Fantastic Felines – Pounce on into this camp for a roaring good time to learn about the fantastic felines found around the world. Discover cool cat facts in this camp that is sure to leave you purring for more!

Shutterbugs* - Discover the world of wildlife through the lens of your own camera supplied by the Zoo. We’ll print your favorite photos throughout the week so you can create your very own portfolio.


Week 5: June 19th – June 23rd

Around the World – Do you have the travel bug? Get your passport ready and explore each continent’s unique animals, cultures and traditions in this global camp.

I Like to Move It – Slither, swim or climb? Explore the different ways animals move. This camp is all about staying active so get ready to wiggle all week long!

Terrific Teeth – The more facts you discover about sharks, alligators and tigers, the more you will begin to understand these incredible and not so scary, eating machines.

Hide and Seek - See how nature’s masters of disguise use complex camouflage and marvelous mimicry to conquer the game of eye spy.
 

Week 6: June 26th – June 30th

Animals of the Americas – From porcupines to monkeys, wolves to bears, swamps to rainforests and plains to tundra, check out the variety of ecosystems North and South America have to offer.

Be the Creature – Test your animal imitation skills and morph into a new animal each day. Come learn about a variety of animals and find out if you have what it takes to BE the creature.

Monkey Business – Swing through the trees and drop into this camp to learn all about the Zoo’s incredible primates.

Animal Weapons – From goat horns to crab pinchers, animal arsenals are important for survival.  So grab your shield and prepare for battle in this camp of offense/defense!

Eco Art – Go green while you let your imagination and creativity run wild in this earth friendly art camp. Learn how to transform trash into treasure!

Transformers – Some animal babies look nothing like their parents when they are born.  Find out why and how they will change in this camp of terrific transformations.

Under the Sea – Dive in and explore the world beneath the waves! It’s an aquatic jungle out there.

ZOOper Hero’s – Calling all super heroes! Explore the awesome adaptation and abilities of animals, such as spectacular speed and excellent eyesight, and use them as a guide for the creation of your own team of Zooper heroes!

Powerful Predators – What is life like at the top of the food chain? Visit the predators found at the Zoo and learn the many adaptations nature’s best hunters use to get their next meal.

Fantastic Beasts! – From dragons to unicorns, take a magical journey with the creatures from your favorite stories and movies! We’ll explore these mythological beasts and take a closer look at the real animals that inspired them!


Week 12: August 7th, 8th& 9th (1, 2 or 3 day camp)

Reptile Rap - Slither into this camp to find out what it means to be cold-blooded. Explore the special features that set reptiles apart from other creatures on the planet.

Fantastic Beasts! – From dragons to unicorns, take a magical journey with the creatures from your favorite stories and movies! We’ll explore these mythological beasts and take a closer look at the real animals that inspired them!

Jurassic Journey – Take a trip back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Learn what the world was like before we were around and what kinds of creatures still remain from our primal past.

Ocean Commotion - Dive in and explore the world beneath the waves! It’s an aquatic jungle out there.


Week 3: June 5th – June 9th

Dr. Zoo Little – Do you want to work with animals when you grow up? Then this camp is for you! Learn about the many people, from zookeepers to park rangers, whose jobs are helping and caring for animals.

Rainforest Rangers – Climb through the canopy to discover the diversity of plants and animals unique to rainforests and learn ways to save their shrinking habitat around the world.

Week 4: June 12th – June 16th

Animal Actors – Learn about some of the movies’ most famous animal actors, find out how these stars trained, and discover where Hollywood bends the truth of animal information in this camp of lights, camera, action!

Totally Toxic – Find out who is equipped with deadly spit, slime or skin and discover whose bites are worse than their bark in this camp about some of the planet’s deadliest creatures.

Eco Art - Go green while you let your imagination and creativity run wild in this earth friendly art camp. Learn how to transform trash into treasure!


Week 5: June 19th – June 23rd

Cyrpto – Quest – The Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, mermaids, giant squids and more! Walk the fine line of science and legend to decide if these mythological creatures really did, or still do, exist.

Zoo-hoy Mateys – Yo ho, yo ho! A zoo camp is for me! In this swashbuckling adventure, aspiring pirates will practice hunting for buried treasure, learn how to train parrots, and come face to face with mermaids and sea monsters!

Week 6: June 26th – June 30th

Jurassic Journey – Take a trip back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Learn what the world was like before we were around and what kinds of creatures still remain from our primal past.

Animal Care – Learn the “dos and don’ts” of animal care and husbandry, from wild to domestic animals, to find out if you have what it takes to care for animals.

World Explorers – Do you have the travel bug? Get your passport ready and explore each continent’s unique animals, cultures and traditions in this global camp.


Week 8: July 10th – July 14th

Eco-Art – Go green while you let your imagination and creativity run wild in this earth friendly art camp. Learn how to transform trash into treasure!

River Monsters – Dive on in to learn about some of the fascinating and diverse creatures that live in the rivers, streams, and creeks all over the world, including those in your backyard.

Pikazoo- Create, train, compete and evolve mythological animals based on our zoo friends. Create trading cards and play the game to see who can be the ultimate winner!


Week 9: July 17th – July 21st

Crypto-Quest – The Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, mermaids, giant squids and more! Walk the fine line of science and legend to decide if these mythological creatures really did, or still do, exist.

Hungry Games – Learn what it means to be at the top of the food chain. Explore the animal world to find out who the best hunter is and how others avoid becoming their dinner!

Week 10: July 24th – July 28th

Zoo-hoy Matey’s – Yo ho, yo ho! A zoo camp is for me! In this swashbuckling adventure, aspiring pirates will practice hunting for buried treasure, learn how to train parrots, and come face to face with mermaids and sea monsters!

What’s in a Name – Which animals swim together in a pod? What animals are known as pups when they are babies? Hint: it’s not just dogs! And what on earth is a “Rhinoceros Unicornis”? Come play the animal name game.

Positively Primates - Swing through the trees and drop into this camp to learn all about the Zoo’s incredible primates.


Week 11: July 31st – August 4th

Sensory Safari – Who has the best sight? What about smell? Discover more about animals’ amazing abilities and find out how humans measure up. Maybe you have a 6th sense!


Week 12: August 7th, 8th and 9th (1, 2 or 3 day camp)

Animals A-Z - With the alphabet as your map, navigate the diversity of the animal kingdom like never before. Let the letters guide you from Alligators to Zebras and everything in between. 

Week 1: May 22nd – May 26th

Comic Conservation – The animals of the world need your help! Raise awareness about conservation by creating your own comic featuring the Zoo’s endangered animals. Will you rescue manatees in Tampa Bay or save Orangutans in the jungles of Borneo? Only you can decide!


Week 2: May 29th – June 2nd

Animal Enrichments – Animals love getting gifts and treats, too! Find out how phonebooks, boxes, t-shirts, and pinecones can bring out the wild side of the Zoo’s animal residents. 

Xtreme Science* - Get ready for a wild week of wacky experiments that show us how our world works. Have fun making things ooze, grow and even change colors!


Week 3: June 5th – June 9th

Zoo-vivor – Learn how to survive in nature’s harshest environments from the animals that have developed state-of-the-art means for living in these extreme conditions including building shelters in the snow like polar bears and setting traps for food like spiders. Then complete challenges to put your newly developed survival skills to the test.

Animal Trainer* - There is much more to animal training than sit and stay. Learn the fundamentals of animal behavior and training, then use that knowledge throughout the week as you work with a partner to train one of our rats to run the maze that you design, create and build.


Week 4: June 12th – June 16th

If I Ran A Zoo – Become an owner of your own zoo. Work in a team and compete to create the best zoo possible in this game of ex-zoo-lence. Face challenges, earn Zoo Bucks and practice proper animal husbandry to perfect your zoo throughout the week. May the best tycoon win! 

Wildlife Photography* - Bring your own camera and learn how to capture our living earth through the lens by an expert photographer. Your favorite pictures will be printed and crafted into a keepsake scrapbook to remember for years to come.


Week 5: June 19th – June 23rd

Zoo Scene Investigation – Solve some of the biggest mysteries in the animal kingdom. Develop your animal detective skills in this week of mystery, discovery and fun!

Junior Zookeeper* - Ever thought about being a zookeeper when you grow up? Learn what it takes to face the difficult challenges and awesome rewards of animal care. Get ready to get dirty! 


Week 6: June 26th – June 30th

Zoo Design – Learn how animals build their homes in nature before testing your skill at designing your own zoo.

Animal Trainer* - There is much more to animal training than sit and stay. Learn the fundamentals of animal behavior and training, then use that knowledge throughout the week as you work with a partner to train one of our rats to run the maze that you design, create and build.


Week 7: July 3rd – July 7th

Beach Biology – The beach isn’t just for sunbathing and building sand castles – it’s an entire ecosystem on its own. You’ll never look at the beach the same again as you discover the amazing creatures that call it home.

Wildlife Photography* - Bring your own camera and learn how to capture our living earth through the lens by an expert photographer. Your favorite pictures will be printed and crafted into a keepsake scrapbook to remember for years to come.

Animal Handling I* - Get ready for a close-up encounter with some of our Animal Ambassadors! Learn the facts and practice perfecting your animal handling technique in preparation for a live animal show in our very own Saunders Conservation Theatre for Zoo guests and parents!


Week 5: June 19th – June 23rd

If I Ran A Zoo – Become an owner of your own zoo. Work in a team and compete to create the best zoo possible in this game of ex-zoo-lence. Face challenges, earn Zoo Bucks and practice proper animal husbandry to perfect your zoo throughout the week. May the best tycoon win! 

Animal Handling II* - Put your animal knowledge and handling skills to the test as the student becomes the teacher. This camp will focus on in-Zoo animal encounters for visitors! (Animal Handling I must have been completed this year or a past year to enroll in this camp). 


Week 6: June 26th – June 30th

Wild Careers – Did you ever think about working in a zoo? Get ready to learn about different zoo career opportunities; from marketing to executive chef, and vet to zookeeper, find out if the world of zoos is for you.

Zoo-vivor – Learn how to survive in nature’s harshest environments from the animals that have developed state-of-the-art means for living in these extreme conditions including building shelters in the snow like polar bears and setting traps for food like spiders.
