Protect the Penguins
Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo is currently the only AZA-accredited institution in Florida with a breeding colony of African penguins. The Zoo opened its African penguin exhibit in 2007, with the first chick hatched in 2011. We have had remarkable success raising penguin families, with EIGHT chicks hatched in the last three years.
How You Can Help:
We are working to expand our African penguin nursery so that we have more room to raise chicks and protect the species. Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo set a $350,000 fundraising target to double the size of its penguin breeding center. The Zoo recently received a grant from the State of Florida, as well as a private donation to reach half of the goal. When you help the Zoo care for African penguins, you help their species survive.
